NEW HEADTEACHER |
I can hardly believe that I’m almost at the end of my first year at Prince Henry’s - the time has passed by so quickly! It has been an amazing ten months and I am extremely grateful to the many members of staff, parents, governors and students that have helped me to settle in so quickly. It is an absolute pleasure to work hard for the benefit of our engaging students who are so committed to learning and proud of their school. I am now even more determined to ensure further improvement to Prince Henry’s Grammar School to make a good school even better! |
GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP DAY |

Students spent the day focusing on the continent of Africa as part of the school's annual Global Citizenship Day, entitled "Timanyane" ("Let's know each other"). The day gave students the opportunity to focus on some of the challenges facing the continent, such as access to education, HIV/AIDS, maternal health and sustainable water supplies, whilst also celebrating its rich and diverse culture. |

CHINESE EXCHANGE VISIT |

Prince Henrys welcomed 19 students and 3 staff from Xuejun High School, Hangzhou in April. The students will be spending a week living and working alongside their host partners. The visit follows the outgoing exchange trip to Hangzhou in October 2009. The packed programme included visits to York, Howarth, the National Coal Mining Museum and the National Media Museum as well as a reception by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Judith Elliott. |

| STUDENT COUNCIL LISTENS TO IT'S STUDENTS | |

The Student Council has successfully relocated the unused bus shelters to the quad outside Main Hall. This is following consultation with the wider school in response to their need for more shelter around school. This has also included a relocated seating area for students' use. |
| PRINCE HENRY'S PRESENTS: SOUTH PACIFIC - 24 MARCH - 27 MARCH | |

Staff and pupils excitedly rehearsed for the School's Annual Production. This year the production was South Pacific (music by Richard Rogers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II). The production took place in the main school hall from Wednesday 24 March to Saturday 27 March at 7.30 pm. Tickets were available from the school and sold fast. Some staff and ex-students who were in the show when it was last produced by the school 20 years ago are returning to see the show. |
| YORKSHIRE DALES ROTARY CLUB’S CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGE | |
It was the first time that Prince Henry’s Grammar School Specialist Language College Year 12 Technology students had entered the Yorkshire Dales Rotary Club’s Key Stage 5 Technical Tournament Construction Challenge and they won, beating 5 other schools in the area. The competition was held at Gargrave and the team’s challenge was to build a Light Tower where the light flashed once per second for 10 seconds using only mechanical means. The team were presented with a trophy and plaque and will now go forward to the national finals. |

| WAYE TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP | |
Recently one of our students was presented with a cheque for the Waye Travelling Scholarship Bursary. This bursary can be applied for by any student in the Sixth Form who is planning some form of travel. The bursary was donated to the school by the late Mr Douglas Waye, a former Chair of the Foundation Governors and Honorary Citizen of Otley. The cheque was presented by his daughter Mrs Pam Beck, Secretary to the Foundation Governors and the present Chair of Foundation Governors, Dr Chris Hatton. The picture also shows the Headteacher, Ms Janet Sheriff. The cheque is to be put towards a visit to Germany. |

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT |
Prince Henry's are supporting Fairtrade Fortnight in school. Fairtrade bars will be on sale in Henry's along with Banana Cake, Banana Trifle, Banana Pancakes and Chocolate Cake all made from Fairtrade ingredients. There will be a Fairtrade Quiz - Fairtrade bars will be available for the winners! Pupils have a chance of winning a giant Fairtrade bar by bringing in Fairtrade packaging showing the Fairtrade symbol. |
| NETBALL SUCCESS | |
Good luck to Prince Henry's U16 Netball squad who entered the West Yorkshire round of the National Schools netball final. All West Yorkshire schools played a tournament and the top two teams went through to the Yorkshire and Humberside round (2) of the national schools final. Prince Henry's beat Wakefield Girls to go through and represent West Yorkshire in Rotherham. |

| ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONIES | |
Prince Henry’s Grammar School Sixth Form and GCSE pupils were presented with certificates, shields and trophies at the Annual Presentation Evening held in December. The event recognised academic, sporting and creative achievements as well as effort and service to the school and wider community. Headteacher Ms Janet Sheriff said: “The success and achievement is a reflection of the dedication, hard work and effort from students and teachers. It’s a wonderful pleasure and privilege to see the students collect awards and the support they show for each other.” Guest speaker Reverend Graham Buttanshaw Vicar of Otley Parish Church, spoke to the audience about humility. He acknowledged the school’s Specialist Language College status and close partnerships with countries such as China and South Africa and praised the school’s desire to produce “people passionately caring about the world we live in.” Head of Sixth Form Trevor Davidson said: “It shows that as well as having fun students also manage to come up with the goods in terms of academic achievements.” |

SUCCESS IN COOKERY COMPETITION |
Prince Henry's Grammar School and Otley Rotary Club have been working closely over the festive period on a competition to get students cooking! The Year 10 Food Technology group have been busy designing and making a dish suitable for a festive meal. Toby won the £50 prize with his roasted gammon with blackened crackling and Cumberland sauce followed by a chocolate and orange fondant. Deborah and Katherine were close runners up. "Its been a great opportunity for the students to really get into the festive spirit and cook some traditional dishes with their own twist!" commented Miss Pearce, Food Technology Teacher. "We really appreciate the support of the Rotary Club, and the time that Trevor Backhouse and Michael Rhodes have given to the students."

| HISTORY PUPILS "EXPERIENCE THE SPIRIT" | |

History students at Prince Henry's Grammar School were recently treated to a historical presentation - "The Spirit of Frederick Douglas" - presented by American actor, Michael E Crutcher, Sr. Frederick was a former American slave and the presentation told the story of his life. The performance was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students. |

OTLEY CHEVIN FOREST PARK TRAIL |
Head of Art at Prince Henry's, Mr Shane Green, spent his summer holidays chainsaw carving a Sculpture Trail for Otley Chevin Forest Park. The trail consists of nine large scale wood carvings documenting the history of this area from prehistoric man and fossils through to Thomas Chippendale and the modern day use of the Chevin by mountain bikers and walkers. |

YOUNG CITIZENS PANEL |

Working in partnership with West Yorkshire Police, Prince Henry's has been successfully running a Young Citizens Panel for over three years. The aim of the panel is to encourage the young people of Prince Henry's to help other people in the community understand the problems that society faces following acts of crime or anti-social behaviour. RESPONSIBLE HOLIDAY CHALLENGE |
One of the teams from the AS Travel & Tourism class have won a trip to the Gambia to accompany Leeds Metropolitan students in January plus £1000 to purchase resources for the school. This was after entering the University's Tourism Department "Responsible Holiday Challenge." |

The receipients of the Dr Mike Thompson Award for Chemistry which was awarded at our recent Awards Assemblies. Dr Mike Thompson, the sponsor of this prize, is a former pupil of Prince Henrys. He is now an author and head of Chemistry at Winchester College |
NEW PEDESTRIAN CROSSING ON FARNLEY LANE |
Work on the new pedestrian crossing on Farnley Lane outside the school, which will include raising the road on either side to slow traffic, adding dropped kerbs and moving a bus stop, has now begun. Prince Henrys has been calling for years for a crossing to be installed on Farnley Lane - the scene of several near missses - to help safeguard students. |

Prince Henry's was visited by representatives of the British Council and the DCSF Joint International Unit. The school was selected as a case study of good practice in terms of addressing issues of global citizenship. |

BBC'S "HUNGER TO LEARN" WEEK |

Sixth Form students at Prince Henry's have spent a day taking part in live webcam interviews with young people from Gaza as part of the BBC's "Hunger to Learn" week in which schools from around the world have linked up with schools across the UK to explore some of the obstacles which children and their families overcome to get an education. |
