Fixed/Home Study

Students working in the LibraryFixed study and home study allow you to tackle some of the additional work outside your timetabled lesson which is needed to really succeed at post-16.

Fixed Study

During Year 12, fixed study periods must be taken in the library. In Year 13 you can work in the Quad or the library.  Have look at this pdf, for advice on how to make the most of this time.

Home Study

Students who have made good progress and have high levels of attendance will be able to study at home during some afternoon lessons.  Home study periods will be indicated on student timetables and on Arbor.  All other study periods must be spent in school.  The number of periods of Home Study will increase during Year 12 as students adjust to independent working.

Home study is a privilege and can be taken away.  Students must not commit to part-time work during home study periods – this is time to complete school work.

Part-time Work

A large number of students in the Sixth Form have some kind of part-time work and this is encouraged, to an extent. Research shows that students engaged in part-time work for up to six hours a week perform marginally better in their examinations. However, too much work can significantly weaken your academic performance. Therefore, nine hours a week should be the very maximum amount you should be taking on.

Part-time work should not be undertaken during Home Study or immediately after school as Sixth Form Supported Study and booster sessions run until 4pm.
