Skills Gap & Labour Market Information (LMI)

As the UK negotiates its new place in the world, an accelerating wave of economic, social and technological changes are reshaping the country and the skills required to achieve success.  As a careers team it is essential that we remain at the forefront of change, and use the most up to date labour market information (LMI) to inform our provision, ensuring our students are excellently prepared for their future- whatever that may hold.

LMI can be everything from overwhelming and confusing in-depth statistics, to hearing about a potential employer starting up near where you live. Learning how to use it can help young people to make informed decisions about their future study and career choices.  LMI tells you about what is happening in the job market at national, regional and local levels and includes information about jobs and salaries, what skills employers are looking for in different industrial sectors, conditions, communities and future trends.

Are you interested in a few different career areas and want to see how they compare side by side? This tool from the LMI for All website (http://www.lmiforall.org.uk/) lets you compare up to three jobs and look at how much they pay, what your day-to-day duties might be and whether there will be many job opportunities available in this career area in the future.

How do I use the widget?

      1. Type in the title of the job that you are interested in
      2. A series of options will appear and select the one that relates to you.
      3. Look up another two occupations and compare the data provided.
      4. You can also select ‘display the UK average’ and compare the information with the occupation you have selected.

    Skillsometer

When you are starting on this journey, you might want to try the Skillsometer below. It can help your child discover what jobs they might like to do in the future. They will be presented with a series of statements. They should select the emoji which shows how they feel about each statement. They will then be given suggestions of jobs linked to what they most enjoy doing. For each job, they will be presented with some headline UK data.
