    Design & Technology

Student in apron working in technologyFACULTY LEADER: Mrs A Blakeley

The Design, Technology and Innovation Faculty is very successful and has an enthusiastic and ambitious team of teachers accommodated in a dedicated suite of rooms. Our main aim is to foster design awareness and encourage manufacturing ability via quality solutions to problems within a full range of material areas. These are:

    • Food Science and Nutrition with Hospitality and Catering
    • Design and Technology
    • Fashion and Textiles

An integral part of many projects is the use of ICT including Computer aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM).

    KS3 Curriculum

The KS3 curriculum is specifically designed to embed the skills which are needed for later life and to enable students to progress to GCSE.  We deliver a range of projects which enthuse and inspire students, with a strong focus on practical skills and group work to develop a respectful working environment. Each project has unique challenges and is designed to build independence, confidence and resilience. During each subsequent year, students revisit material areas and engage in more detailed projects, building on existing skills and knowledge to create a variety of individual outcomes. Students are taught in mixed-ability classes in all year groups. Students have the opportunity to experience all areas of Technology during KS3 on a carousel basis.

    Assessment

    Key Stage 3

Students are assessed on a “little and often basis” to enable teachers to make an informed judgement about progress.  The students stay with their same teacher for the duration of the year enabling us to be flexible in the teaching of the schemes of work, giving the opportunity to focus on areas of crucial learning which has not been fully grasped.  In addition to this all students sit a summative assessment at the end of each module / subject.

    Key Stage 4/5

Students follow the AQA Syllabus for DT, Textiles and Food Preparation and Nutrition. WJEC is also followed by the level 1 and 2 Hospitality and Catering and Level 3 Food Science and nutrition Course.  Assessments take place on a regular basis to establish understanding.  All subject areas are assessed through a combination of controlled assessment and exam (50% awarded to each other than in Level 1 and 2 WJEC Hospitality and Catering which has a heavier weighting towards coursework of 60%).
